For the first time West Bengal government is focusing on developing tourism in Sagar Islands with a motive to promote it as the biggest tourism hub in East India. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is going to visit the destination on 30th and 31st October along with a number of industrialists. The decision to promote the destination as a major tourist hub was taken after the several virgin islands were found near Sagar Island.
Mamata Banerjee aims to project the fact that Sagar islands can be turned into a tourist destination of international standard so that globetrotters from all over the world can include the islands in their wishlist. River and sea cruises, accommodation in yachts and tents, sun- kissed virgin beaches and water sport activities can lead to a memorable travel experience. Sagar Island is also one of the biggest and important pilgrimage spots that hosts the famous ‘Sagar Mela’ in the month of January. So tourism hub can easily grow around the island to attract more domestic and international tourists. Alapan Bandyopadhyay, principal secretary of transport said that West Bengal plans to offer facilities and operations in Sagar Island on the lines of Kerala backwaters.
Mamata Banerjee has already started looking for investors to invest in deep sea port resort at the island. West Bengal government feels if all the plans are executed properly then the economy of Sagar Island region can get a boost.
